Cambodia Inaugurates State-of-the-Art Toilet Waste Treatment Plant

Cambodia celebrates a groundbreaking achievement as the nation’s first-ever toilet waste treatment plant, valued at over US$1 million, is officially unveiled in Sangkat Phleung Cheh Roteh, Khan Kampot, Phnom Penh.

During the ceremony held on 19 May, Phnom Penh Governor Khuong Sreng expressed his enthusiasm, highlighting that this remarkable facility marks Phnom Penh’s inaugural treatment plant. The construction commenced on 24 May 2022, with a budget of US$1,194,557, and a comprehensive financing plan exceeding US$3.7 million. Esteemed partners, including SIAAP, AIMF, AESN, alongside the generous contribution from Phnom Penh Capital Hall, have collaborated to bring this visionary project to life.

Governor Khuong Sreng further explained that a study conducted in 2001 revealed that Phnom Penh’s annual toilet waste production amounted to only 26,000 cubic meters. However, it is estimated that by 2035, this figure will surge to approximately 330,000 cubic meters per year, representing a nearly 13-fold increase in toilet waste generation.

Ms Ariana Adeshi, the Permanent Deputy Secretary in Charge of the Cooperation Program at the International Association of French Mayors (AIMF), shared her excitement about the project. She emphasized that AIMF, with a decade-long expertise in water treatment, has been instrumental in establishing the treatment plant—a monumental step forward for Phnom Penh. (Read more)

Post-inauguration, AIMF will provide ongoing technical assistance to ensure the seamless and successful operation of the treatment plant, ultimately benefiting the well-being of the population.

The project boasts three key advantages. Firstly, it yields significant environmental benefits by facilitating the proper management of toilet waste. Secondly, it generates social benefits by creating employment opportunities and transforming toilet waste into organic fertilizers, thereby reducing the reliance on chemical fertilizers. Lastly, the endeavor reaps economic benefits through the sale of organic fertilizers in the agricultural market, epitomizing the concept of “waste management.”

This remarkable achievement not only underscores Cambodia’s commitment to sustainable development but also serves as a transformative step toward a cleaner and more hygienic future for its citizens.
