115-hectare Solar Plant to Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Cambodia

A project to build a 115-hectare solar power plant in Kompong Speu province will reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Cambodia, according to the results of an inter-ministerial meeting regarding the development of the project.

According to a Facebook post by the Ministry of Environment, the inter-ministerial meeting last week found that the solar-powered development by SchneiTec Group will greatly benefit Cambodia citing that the price of produced electricity sold to Electricite Du Cambodge (EDC) would be 7.6 US dollar cents per kilowatt-hour. Moreover, the project will help reduce greenhouse gas emissions in Cambodia.

The meeting also covered 7 key points.

1-Review, analyse and present the characteristics and information of the development project and establish a 60-megawatt solar power plant on 115 hectares of land.
2-Study biological resources, biological resources and social economic resources within and around the project as a benchmark for environmental and social impact assessments.
3-Hold consultations with local people, local authorities and related specialised departments for recommendations on the project
4-Identify the size of the environmental impact on natural resources and the existing social environment in the study area both positively and negatively due to the project’s operational activities.
5-Identify environmental and social impacts (negative) that can occur from project activities at a minimum level.
6-Analyse economic value and environmental values both in positive and negative terms.
7-Prepare environmental and social funds to restore the environment and participate in the development of villages that are associated with the investment projects.

The plant will comprise of 200,000 solar panels installed by the world’s largest manufacturer of solar panels JinkoSolar Holding Co., Ltd. (Read more)
