Solar power to account 15% of total power consumption next year

Cambodian government announced that next year power generated from solar farms will account 15% of total power output in the national grid. It is a contribution to reduce climate change.

Keo Ratanak, Director General of Electricte Du Cambodge (EDC), said in a press conference held on Thursday that the 15% from solar farms in the national grid will join with power generate from hydropower dams which currently accounts 50% of total power output.

Mr Ratanak said the up to 15% of power from solar farms compared to total power consumption will make Cambodia a leading among the regional countries.

“This 15% is a Cambodia’s proud and it also contributes to reduce climate changes which Cambodia is one of signatories of Paris Agreement on Climate Change”, Mr Ratanak said.

Currently, two solar farms are generating power and supplied to the national grid, including solar farm in Bavet town with 10 MW and solar farm in Udong district, Kampong Speu province with 60 MW.

Victor Jona, Director General of Mines at Ministry of Mines and Energy, said that the government is focusing on solar power due to investment on solar farm is fast in produce power, a green energy, and will be multiple power sources.

Since the first solar farm project has done in 2017, more solar projects have been approved to supply power as the power demand has increased, Mr Jona said.
