135 MW coal-fired power plant in Stung Hav to come online this December

A coal-fired power plant in Stung Hav with the capacity to produce 135 MW is scheduled to start operating this December. The power generated from the plant will play an important part in solving the current power shortage.

A senior government official in charge of the power sector said that the plant is the result of an investment by Leader Energy Holdings, an energy company from Malaysia using the company name –Cambodia Energy II Co Ltd (CEL II).

Victor Jona, Director General of Energy at the Ministry of Mines and Energy, said that the construction of the plant using equipment with a circulating fluidised bed boiler, an electrostatic precipitator and an advanced steam turbine has been completed and is now in the testing stage before putting the plant into operation.

“To the present, the construction and installation of the management system in the plant have already been completed and the testing stage is being implemented to make sure before putting into operation later this month,” Mr Jona said.

The 135 MW CEL II is located in Steung Hav district, Preah Sihanoukville province and the investment totalled US$259 million, after construction started in 2017.

The power generated from the plant will be bought by Cambodia’s state-owned energy utility Electricite du Cambodge (EDC).

The CEL I power plant, also invested in by Leader Energy Holdings, comprises two 50MW coal-fired generating units that came online in November 2014 and March 2015 respectively.
