Industry Ministry urges Japanese to invest in clean water supplies

The Ministry of Industry and Handicrafts has encouraged Japanese investors to invest in the clean water sector in Cambodia to increase access to sustainable clean water services for all citizens as soon as possible.

Investment in the clean water sector will partly contribute to the government’s policy to connect 100% of urban and rural areas with clean water by 2025.

Speaking at the Cambodia-Japan Water Supply and Sewage Seminar held on 22 January, H.E. Cham Prasidh, Senior Minister and Minister of Industry and Handicrafts, said that demand for clean water has increased significantly due to economic growth, better standards of living, and the rise of real estate developments.

“The ministry continues to provide support and encouragement to both domestic and foreign investors who are technically and financially capable, especially the Japanese private sector, to invest in Cambodia’s clean water sector with the aim to allow people to get access to clean and sustainable water services as soon as possible,” H.E. Cham Prasidh said.

According to figures provided by the minister, current water consumption in Cambodia is approximately 30 million cubic metres per day.

Currently, the ministry has 11 water supply authorities and 258 private operators, which have received licenses from the ministry for supplying clean water to the populace.

“We are producing clean water, but not enough. Thus, we organised the seminar to attract more investors in the clean water supply. Particularly, we want to find wholesale water suppliers to produce large-scale clean water plants and prepare main pipelines to areas where retailers can buy and distribute to people,” H.E. Cham Prasidh said.

The seminar was held to showcase the potential of clean water in Cambodia, to share experiences of development of Japan’s water sector, as well as to provide support to Japanese investors.
