Government plans to reopen Battambang airport

The Royal Government of Cambodia has announced plans to re-open Battambang airport and requested studies for future development on reconstructing the abandoned airport.

Speaking at the River Festival held in Battambang province last week, Samdech Techo Hun Sen ordered provincial, municipal and relevant departments to keep maintaining the Battambang airport and inform residents living close to the airport not to build any high buildings which may affect the future development of the airport.

“Once the people’s living standard is better, it is time that airport is needed to respond to the transportation, whether by vehicle, or train, or aircraft or helicopter,” he said.

Following the PM’s announcement, the Ministry of Tourism unveiled plans to reopen an abandoned airport in Battambang province to facilitate the travel of national and international tourists.

“The airport of Battambang should be restored and rehabilitated to facilitate travel and tourism,” said the Minister of Tourism.

Battambang airport has been shut down since 1991, after a short period of serving military operations during the Republic of Cambodia from 1979. The airport was also shut down when the Khmer Rouge came to power in 1975 after being built-in 1967. (Read More)
