Gov’t Requests Chinese Firm to Build New Water Supply Network from SR City to New Airport

The Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation (MISTI) has requested the Siem Reap International Airport construction firm AIAI to invest approximately US$13 million to build a clean water supply connecting downtown Siem Reap to the new airport in Sot Nikum district.

The request was raised by MISTI Minister HE Cham Prasidh during the meeting with the State Secretariat of Civil Aviation (SSCA), and AIAI representatives on 21 September.

HE Cham Prasidh said that since the new airport is located in Sot Nikum district, 50 km from Siem Reap city, the biggest challenge is the lack of clean water supply. Thus, the only solution is to build a new network connecting to the Siem Reap Water Supply Authority.

“The total distance from the border of Siem Reap city to the new airport is only 25km. Given the distance, if the firm uses a 600 mm pipeline, along with the construction of storage tanks, and distribution sub-stations, the whole project could cost about US$12 to US$13 million,” said HE Prasidh.

He added that the construction of the new network will be able to supply 5,000 to 10,000 cubic metres of water per day, which is more than what the firm requested but will respond to the increasing business activities, factories, and other development in the future.

In response, representatives of the firm accept the ministry’s recommendations and will discuss them with the management level before making a further decision.

To date, the construction of the new Siem Reap International Airport is approximately 45% complete and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2022.
