Feasibility Study on Upgrading Railways to High-Speed Finished in Three Months

The feasibility study for upgrading two existing railways— Phnom Penh-Poipet and Phnom Penh-Sihanoukville— to high-speed lines is set to be completed in the next three months, according to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT).

MPWT Minister HE Sun Chanthol updated the study progress of this project during an online meeting with his Thai counterpart HE SaksayamChidchob, on Thursday 20 April.

The study on the development of high-speed rail projects in Cambodia is being undertaken at the same time as Cambodia and Thailand have agreed to open the Stueng Bot-Ban Nong Ian international border crossing to facilitate cross-border freight.

The connection of physical infrastructure between the two countries would not only increase the volume of trade, tourism and investment but also be a key factor in boosting the economic development of the two countries, said HE Sun Chanthol.

The study to upgrade the railway system came after Samdech Prime Minister Hun Sen ordered the feasibility study on upgrading existing railways but also building more across the nation. (Read more)
