Cambodia’s US$ 1 Billion Dollar Deep-Sea Port Now Open for Business

A new container port worth nearly USD1 billion at the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port has been officially opened under the presidency of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, Prime Minister of Cambodia.

The project to expand the capacity of Sihanoukville Autonomous Port is expected to cost a total of USD973 million, including concessional loans from the Government of Japan of about USD760 million, the contribution of the Government of Cambodia for various taxes of approximately USD 192 million, and the direct budget of the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port of approximately USD 21 million.

The above project includes the following components:

1. General Cargo Terminal: This will be 253 meters long and is scheduled to be completed in September 2024, making it an 18-month construction project. The upgraded port will be equipped with a modern container lift, increasing the capacity of the additional container port by about 35% (250,000TEUs per year).

2. New Container Station – Phase 1: The station will be 350 meters long and 14.5 meters deep, expected to be completed in 2026 after a 36-month construction project. It can carry a container ship with a capacity of 60,000 DWT (or equivalent) with a transit route in the Asia-Pacific region to the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port. This will increase port capacity by an additional 450,000TEUs per year.

3. New Deepwater Container Station – Phase 2: Scheduled for completion in 2028, after 36 months of construction, the station will be 400 meters long and 16.5 meters deep. It will carry 120,000 DWT (or 10,000TEUs) container vessels with shipping lanes in the Indian Ocean and Pacific to Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, increasing its port capacity to 570,000 TEUs per year.

4. New Deepwater Container Station – Phase 3: The station will be 430 meters long and 17.5 meters deep, scheduled for completion in 2029 after a 42-month construction project. It will have the capacity of a container ship with a load of 160,000 DWT (or 15,000TEUs) with European and US shipping lanes to the Sihanoukville Autonomous Port, increasing the port capacity by an additional 617,000 TEUs. On that occasion, Samdech Techo Hun Sen stated that the construction of the deep-sea port in the first phase, completed by 2026, will help reduce transaction costs on trade and increase Cambodia’s access to ships by 18%. To about 93 percent. (Read more)
