US$3bn Buddhist Peace Culture Centre to be Built in Siem Reap

An awe-inspiring project that embraces serenity, spirituality, and global unity is set to grace the vibrant landscapes of Siem Reap province in December this year. Spanning an expansive 288 hectares with an estimated budget of approximately US$200 million, augmented by ancillary infrastructure investments reaching a sum of US$3 billion, the Buddhist Peace Culture Centre’s inception heralds an investment of remarkable significance, according to a BTV broadcast on 22 August 2023.

This mega Buddhist shrine marks a monumental endeavour, with participation from 28 Buddhist associations representing countries around the world including China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and some other European countries. This visionary initiative is poised to redefine cultural tourism and elevate Siem Reap’s allure to unprecedented heights.

Mr Lim Peter, Project Manager of the Buddhist Peace Culture Centre of Cambodia, succinctly captured the essence of this transformative venture, explaining that, “The BPCC holds the noble aim of providing a unifying haven for Buddhists from across the globe, where they can delve into the profound teachings of Buddha amidst an idyllic sanctuary.”

The centre’s multifaceted mission extends beyond spiritual enrichment, beckoning tourists to embark on an odyssey that merges self-discovery with cultural exploration.

He added that “Another purpose is also to attract more tourists to visit the centre while practising Dhamma and also to visit other cultural sites in Siem reap the iconic historical place of Cambodia at the same time.”

Nestled in the heart of Chreav commune, Siem Reap city, Siem Reap province, this architectural marvel stands as a testament to human innovation. Notably, the architectural blueprints were meticulously crafted by a talented Khmer student from Norton University, a poignant testament to the nurturing of local talent.

“This ambitious venture is grounded in the recognition of Buddhism as a global cultural phenomenon. With approximately 600 million Buddhists around the world, the Buddhist Peace Culture Centre envisions itself as a sanctuary of cultural and spiritual communion. The selection of Siem Reap, already renowned for its cultural tapestry woven with over 900 temples, perfectly aligns with this noble vision,” added Mr Lim.
