Cambodian Firm Produces Fibreglass-Surpassing Steel, Boasting Twice the Strength for Construction Advancements

In a groundbreaking development, R&S Steel Cambodia Co. Ltd, a dynamic collaboration between Cambodian and Korean entrepreneurs, has introduced a revolutionary fibreglass product poised to redefine the construction sector. This innovative material, twice as tensile as steel, opens new dimensions for construction applications, offering resilience and versatility.

In an exclusive interview with BTVNews Cambodia on 8 November 2023, the top management of R&S Steel Cambodia Co. Ltd revealed that their fibreglass product, derived from a composite material of glass fibres and resin, showcases unparalleled strength and functionality. This pioneering product has found its niche in various applications, particularly in building constructions, roads, and bridges, with optimal use identified in concrete road building.

Imported into Cambodia in March 2023, this technology, which has been successfully applied in the USA, Australia, and other major markets since 1984, presents a transformative shift in construction materials. Despite its recent introduction to the Cambodian market, rigorous tests conducted at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia in May 2023 substantiate the claim that the fibreglass product’s tensile strength outperforms steel. The test results revealed a tensile strength of 1250 Pa, twice that of conventional steel, proving its mettle in durability.

The fibreglass product, available in sizes ranging from 8mm to 20mm, positions itself as a robust alternative to steel, boasting advantages such as increased tensile strength, reduced weight, and resistance to rust.

“Admittedly, our current production faces challenges as we rely on imported raw materials from Korea,” notes the company representative. “However, we foresee a smoother production process in the future as the market expands and clients offer increased support. Eventually, we aim to eliminate the need for importing raw materials, especially with the promising prospect of local resource cultivation in our country,” he confidently remarks.

In a fervent appeal, the representative underscores the significance of governmental backing for this pioneering venture, stating, “I earnestly request the top management of relevant ministries to support our innovative initiative. This marks a groundbreaking achievement for Cambodia, and such forward-thinking businesses will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in contributing to the country’s overall development.”
