Cambodia’s Labour Landscape Thrives: Nearly 50k Registered Businesses Employ Over 1.7m Workers

The Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training boasts registration numbers of 49,075 factories and businesses, collectively employing more than 1.7 million individuals. This impressive statistic was revealed during a meeting at Sokha Hotel in Phnom Penh on 8 February by Prime Minister Samdech Hun Manet.

Prime Minister Hun Manet emphasised that the registered factories and businesses, documented by the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, yield an annual wage income surpassing US$5.18 billion. Furthermore, he indicated that this financial figure could see an even more significant boost if it incorporated income from informal businesses and remittances from Cambodian workers abroad.

In urging further advancements in the labour sector, Prime Minister Hun Manet called upon the ministry and associated stakeholders to prioritise improving working conditions and expanding vocational training opportunities for workers. He emphasised the need to focus on the work environment, encourage the formal registration of informal businesses for technical support, and enhance the overall working conditions and rights of the Cambodian workforce.
