France Urges Preservation of Ancient Iron Ore Site in Preah Vihear Province

In a significant move to safeguard Cambodia’s historical legacy, experts from the French Institute of the Far East have called upon the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts to preserve an ancient iron ore site discovered in Chep district, Preah Vihear province. HE  Dr Pheung Sakona, Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, revealed this development following discussions with reporters after the ninth plenary session of the International Coordinating Committee for the Conservation and Promotion of the Natural Cultural Site of the Temple of Preah Vihear.

Dr Pheung Sakona highlighted the groundbreaking discovery of ancient iron ore, copper, and smelting stations in Chep district, Preah Vihear province, marking the first such finding in Cambodia. She emphasised the importance of preserving this historical site for further study, research, and potential development as a tourist attraction. Noting the significance of heritage preservation beyond temples and statues, Dr Pheung Sakona stressed the importance of safeguarding sites associated with Cambodia’s rich cultural and industrial history.

The minister underscored the profound historical impact of iron production during the Angkorian period, citing its role in the advancement of Khmer civilisation. She elucidated on the historical significance of iron in various facets of ancient Khmer society, including weaponry, agricultural tools, and jewellery production.

On that occasion, she highlighted the pivotal role of iron in shaping Khmer civilisation, particularly during the zenith of the Angkorian period. Iron was indispensable for crafting a myriad of tools and weaponry, ranging from spears and arrows to essential agricultural implements like ploughs. This technological advancement not only facilitated agricultural practices but also contributed to the flourishing of Khmer society. Moreover, iron played a significant role in the production of jewellery, further enhancing the cultural and artistic landscape of the region.

Furthermore, historical records reveal the longstanding tradition of ironworking among Khmer ancestors, a practice that endured until disrupted by turbulent periods in Cambodian history, including the Lon Nol and Khmer Rouge regimes. Despite these challenges, iron production persisted, as evidenced by accounts from the French colonial era in the 19th century. During this time, iron forged in provinces like Kampong Thom found its way to markets across Southeast Asia, underscoring Cambodia’s historical role in regional trade and commerce.
