Mondulkiri Authorities Enforce 7 Measures to Combat Natural Resource Crime

Mondulkiri provincial authorities have unveiled a comprehensive plan comprising seven key measures aimed at preventing and combating natural resource crimes, particularly within the Nam Lear Wildlife Sanctuary situated in Pichreada and Oreang districts.

In a press release issued on 29 March 2024, the National Committee for the Prevention and Suppression of Natural Resource Crimes in Mondulkiri Province outlined the pivotal steps to safeguard the region’s ecological integrity.

During inspections of the Nam Lear Wildlife Sanctuary, authorities discovered instances of deforestation perpetrated by local individuals, necessitating swift and decisive action to preserve the sanctity of the protected area.

In response to these findings, Mondulkiri Provincial Administration has mandated the following measures:

1. Public Awareness Campaigns: Launch educational initiatives to enlighten citizens about the significance of natural resources and pertinent environmental and forest laws.
2. Administrative Sanctions: Impose disciplinary actions on civil servants and armed forces implicated in criminal activities, while disseminating their names to relevant ministries and institutions.
3. Legal Prosecution: Employ legal measures to apprehend and prosecute perpetrators, masterminds, and accomplices involved in resource crimes.
4. Boundary Marking & Land Registration: Establish clear demarcations through the installation of boundary maps and border posts, facilitating public understanding of forested lands and protected areas.
5. Government Engagement: Solicit the support of the Royal Government to conduct outreach programs in Mondulkiri province, fostering community understanding and collaboration in natural resource conservation efforts.
6. Halt Land Documentation: Direct district, commune, and village authorities to cease the certification of land ownership documents within protected zones.
7. Enhanced Local Management: Advocate for strengthened local governance mechanisms to enhance resource management practices among communities.

These measures underscore the government’s unwavering commitment to preserving Mondulkiri’s natural heritage and ensuring sustainable environmental stewardship for future generations.
