Cambodia Mobilizes to Tackle Water Crisis Ahead of Delayed Rainy Season

As the dry season prolongs its grip on Cambodia, the Ministry of Rural Development has unveiled a comprehensive strategy to mitigate the impact of severe droughts and water shortages plaguing the nation. This initiative, detailed in the “Guidelines on Measures and Interventions on Water and Drinking Water Shortages Due to Climate Change,” published on 21 April 2024, aims to brace the country against the harsh realities of climate change.

The backdrop to this urgent response is the El Nino phenomenon, which has exacerbated conditions across Cambodia, leading to prolonged droughts. With the rainy season expected to be unusually delayed, the Ministry predicts significant fluctuations in the Mekong River levels, resulting in acute shortages of potable water in several regions. This scenario has prompted the Ministry to enact five key emergency measures to ensure the wellbeing of its citizens:

1. The deployment of officials to inspect water sources such as wells, with mandates to undertake immediate repairs and provide interventions for dry ponds and other water bodies in distress.
2. A campaign to educate and advise residents in drought-prone areas on the importance of water conservation and the maintenance of water sources.
3. Collaboration with local and international partners to facilitate rapid assistance for those facing critical drinking water shortages.
4. A directive for senior Ministry officials to support Capital and Provincial Departments of Rural Development in delivering swift aid to rural communities in need.
5. The establishment of a protocol for regular updates and reports to the Ministry, enabling prompt responses to emerging water crises.

These measures reflect the Ministry’s proactive stance in addressing the immediate and long-term challenges of water scarcity. By fostering a collaborative approach among government bodies, international organizations, and local communities, Cambodia aims to navigate the impending dry spell with resilience and preparedness.
