Cambodian Government Implements Artificial Rain Initiative to Combat Heat in Public Schools

In response to the scorching temperatures posing a threat to students’ education, the Cambodian government has directed local authorities to initiate artificial rain setups in public schools. This proactive measure aims to alleviate the adverse effects of the current hot and dry weather on students’ learning environments.

The police of Koh Kong and Mondul Seima districts swiftly commenced operations to create artificial rain by spraying water in various public schools. This initiative targeted school buildings and yards, focusing on institutions such as the primary schools in Khemarak Phoumin City and Cham Yeam School in Mondul Seima District, Koh Kong Province, according to a recent announcement from the Koh Kong Provincial Administration’s Facebook page on 3 May 2024,

Teachers and students in Koh Kong province have warmly welcomed and expressed gratitude for this initiative, recognising its significant contribution to improving the students’ well-being amidst the sweltering weather conditions. The timely water spraying activities orchestrated by the police have been instrumental in mitigating the heat and facilitating an environment conducive to continued learning.

Major General Kong Mono, Koh Kong Provincial Police Commissioner, highlighted the strategic planning undertaken by district police inspectors to execute the artificial rain initiative at the behest of school administrations. This initiative serves as a proactive response to the escalating temperatures, ensuring students’ comfort and safety while fostering uninterrupted learning.

The government’s commitment to addressing the adverse effects of extreme weather conditions on education was further underscored by Samdech Hun Sen’s directive on 1 May. In the event of temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius, students are granted rest breaks for their safety. Additionally, Samdech urged the Ministry of Education to adjust study schedules and suspend classes when necessary, emphasising the importance of local authorities’ readiness to intervene in cases of water shortages to ensure community well-being.
