Japan Introduces Innovative Rice Farming Technology in Pursat to Combat Climate Change

Japan is spearheading a groundbreaking initiative to revolutionise rice farming in Pursat by introducing cutting-edge technology aimed at enhancing soil oxygenation and curbing methane emissions. The project, endorsed by the official Facebook page of JICA in Cambodia on 29 April 2024, promises to revolutionise agricultural practices in the country.

Under the auspices of JICA, Cambodia and Japan have embarked on a collaborative effort to implement and refine technologies geared towards mitigating greenhouse gas emissions from rice fields. The initiative focuses on establishing advanced irrigation and water management systems, particularly in the vast expanse of the Tonle Sap River’s western region.

Scheduled to run from April 2024 to March 2029, the project’s primary objectives include reducing methane emissions from rice cultivation, enhancing water management practices, and contributing to climate change mitigation efforts. Furthermore, it aims to alleviate rural poverty by bolstering rice productivity and income levels through the implementation of a carbon credit framework.

A dedicated Cambodian-Japanese research team will collaborate closely to deploy the innovative technology across various sample locations in Pursat province. This joint endeavour underscores a commitment to harnessing scientific advancements to address pressing environmental and socioeconomic challenges.

Central to the project’s success is the utilisation of Intermittent Irrigation, a pioneering cultivation method that entails periodic irrigation during the rice planting phase. By infusing soil with oxygen and curbing methane emissions, this technique holds immense potential to revolutionise traditional farming practices and foster sustainable agricultural development.
