SCG, Labour Ministry launch 2nd National Contractor Competition to upskill local builders

SCG, a leading ASEAN conglomerate, kicked off the second SCG National Contractor Competition in collaboration with Cambodia’s Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training and a number of leading vocational training schools on Thursday 28 November.

Some 40 contractors, selected from among over 200 applicants who took part in the provincial rounds of competitions organised by SCG and its partners, joined the two-day competition. They competed for skills in cement plastering and roofing, all making use of SCG’s innovative products like SmartBoard and SmartWood.

Mr. Wirot Phanitphotchamarn, SCG General Manager for Sales and Marketing, said the competition reflected the company’s passion to provide better opportunity and living quality for its stakeholders in Cambodia.

“Through this program, we want to improve Cambodian contractors’ craftsmanship and the quality of construction industry in Cambodia as a whole. Moreover, homeowners and project developers will have higher construction standard, thus improving living quality of the Cambodian people,” said Mr. Wirot.

With improved skills and certification from the program, Mr. Wirot added, local contractors would be able to have a better income and career opportunities.

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Lao Him, Undersecretary of State of the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training, said the development of the technical and vocational education and training sector required support and participation from the private sector.

“I would like to ask private companies to support all activities that the public sector need cooperation from the private sector such as internship programs, research and the implementation of standard training packages,” said Mr. Lao Him.

Today’s skills competition, he added, contributed to the achievement of the national policy goals for poverty reduction through skills training, job creation, improved productivity and improved income.

From this competition, three winners from each of the three skill categories would be awarded. The first place winner will get a cash prize of US$500 and a trip to Bangkok, Thailand, the second place winner will be given cash prize of $300, and the third-place winner gets $200 cash prize.

The SCG National Contractor Competition is part of the SCG Contractor Academy Program, which aims to help improve Cambodia’s construction sector in the long run.

SCG has collaborated with the Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training through its National Polytechnic Institute of Cambodia, to organise this annual SCG contractor competition since 2018. As of late 2019, over 400 Cambodian contractors from all over the country have been trained by SCG and some 80 outstanding contractors have attended the SCG contractor competition.
