Cambodia Emerges as World’s Second-Largest Producer of Cashew Nuts with Over 830,000 Tons Harvested

Cambodia has established itself as the world’s second-largest producer of cashew nuts, surpassing India and now trailing only Côte d’Ivoire. In the first seven months of 2024, Cambodia harvested over 830,000 tons of cashew nuts, with more than 780,000 tons exported to Vietnam, generating over USD 1 billion in revenue. This milestone, reported by the Ministry of Information on 22 August 2024, marks a significant achievement for Cambodia’s agricultural sector.

The surge in cashew production, as highlighted by Uon Siloth, President of the Cambodian Cashew Nut Association (CAC), can be attributed to the successful adaptation to the El Nino phenomenon and an expansion in cultivation areas. The Cambodian cashew industry is now poised for further growth, requiring an additional investment of approximately USD 329 million to implement the National Cashew Nut Policy 2022-2027, which focuses on infrastructure development and domestic processing.

Uon Siloth also pointed out the potential for increased employment opportunities through local processing, which could lead to more reasonable pricing and a reduction in the number of intermediaries.
