Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, a key contender in the Road and Highway Project in 2024 Going Digital Awards

Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway Project has been shortlisted for the prestigious Going Digital Awards in the 2024 Year in Infrastructure Event, announced by Bentley Systems on 15 August 2024. This announcement highlights the project’s innovative use of technology and engineering excellence, positioning it as a frontrunner in the global infrastructure arena.

Every year, the Year in Infrastructure brings together the most cutting-edge projects in the construction and infrastructure sectors, all utilising Bentley Systems software to push the boundaries of design, efficiency, and sustainability. The 2024 iteration of this event is set to take place in Vancouver, Canada, from 8-9 October, selecting 36 projects across 12 categories for the final judging round by 34 jurors of the Going Digital Awards.

The Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway, a key contender in the Road and Highway Project Award category, showcases the collaborative and innovative efforts led by the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). This project stands out among major infrastructure developments that will be face-off two other finalist groups from China and the Philippines in the same award category, which is Wuhan Gaoxin 4th Road Reconstruction in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China, led by WISDRI Engineering & Research, and NLEX-SLEX connecting road from Caloocan to Manila, Metro Manila, Philippines, led by PT Hutama Karya (Persero).

This selection not only underlines the project’s significance in enhancing the infrastructure network between Phnom Penh and Bavet but also celebrates the technological advancements and engineering skills that have brought it to the forefront of global infrastructure projects in 2024. The inclusion of the expressway project in such a distinguished list highlights the growing importance of innovative infrastructure solutions in fostering economic growth and connectivity in the Southeast Asia region.

Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway is the second expressway in Cambodia, stretching 138 kilometres and passing through three provinces. China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) was tasked with constructing the expressway that would shorten travel times from two hours to 20 minutes. However, the project was located in a floodplain, with water reaching a maximum of six metres during the rainy season. The team also needed to work around Buddhist temples and cultural relics. Therefore, the team chose to implement digital delivery workflows. Highlighted that the Phnom Penh-Bavet Expressway project was officially a breakground preside under Samdech Techo Hun Sen on 7 June 2023.
CRBC established an open connected data environment using the iTwin Platform, ensuring that the team could always access the most up-to-date information at anytime and any location. MicroStation, OpenRoads, OpenBridge, Bentley LumenRT, iTwin, iTwin Capture, ProjectWise, and ProStructures helped develop models that could be shared with stakeholders. By using Bentley applications, everyone on the project worked together in a unified environment, shortening the design cycle by 20%. The terrain and geological models optimised vertical alignment, reducing earthwork volume by 2 million cubic metres and the equivalent of 2.75 million tons of carbon emissions by eliminating truck travel.
