Cambodia & China Sign Agreement to Preserve Nearly 60K Hectares of Mangrove Forests

To protect and rehabilitate Cambodia’s mangrove forests, the General Department of Protected Areas under the Ministry of Environment signed a collaborative agreement with the International Mangrove Centre, China, to enhance the preservation of 58,800 hectares of mangrove ecosystems.

The agreement was formalized on 12 October 2024, with HE Srey Sunleang, Director General of the General Department of Protected Areas, and Mr. Kong Fanchang, Deputy Director General of the International Mangrove Centre, endorsing the commitment to conservation during a signing ceremony.

The newly established partnership aims to bolster cooperation in natural area management, share best practices, restore degraded mangrove ecosystems, and elevate public awareness about the vital role of mangrove forests in coastal resilience and biodiversity.

“This collaboration is a significant step towards achieving Cambodia’s environmental sustainability goals, setting a strong foundation for global partnerships in mangrove restoration,” stated HE Srey Sunleang.

Cambodia’s mangrove coverage currently extends across 58,800 hectares, with Koh Kong hosting the largest expanse, approximately 46,529 hectares or nearly 79% of the national total. Sihanoukville contributes 9,352 hectares, followed by Kampot with 1,966 hectares, and Kep covering 1,005 hectares.
