PM Celebrates Inauguration of USD 62 Million Dam Rehabilitation Projects in Mondulkiri

Three major dam rehabilitation projects in Mondulkiri, the Otethipadi, Sen Sokdom, and Sen Monorom dams, have officially been inaugurated, representing a USD 62 million investment aimed at transforming the province’s water infrastructure.

The inauguration ceremony, presided over by PM Hun Manet, marked a significant step towards improving local livelihoods, with the projects set to supply clean water to 3,400 families in Sen Monorom City and 2,000 families in Oreang district. The projects were funded through the Royal Government of Cambodia’s budget support fund, established on 18 October 2021, and the inauguration took place on 24 October 2024.

These multi-sectoral water resource projects are designed to meet various developmental needs. Beyond providing clean water, the dams will play a crucial role in irrigating around 1,500 hectares of agro-industrial crops, thereby boosting agricultural productivity.(Read more)

Additionally, the rehabilitated reservoirs are expected to stimulate tourism development in Mondulkiri, further contributing to the region’s economic growth and sustainability.

During the inauguration, the PM highlighted the country’s extensive progress in water infrastructure since 1994. Over this period, Cambodia has constructed more than 1,137 reservoirs, eight large-scale irrigation systems, and 2,366 irrigation canals, which collectively support the irrigation of over 1 million hectares across the country. This ambitious undertaking has invested USD 1.8 billion, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing water resources for agricultural and economic development.

The completion of the Mondulkiri dam projects marks a strategic addition to the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology’s master plan, aimed at expanding water supply coverage across all sectors. As Mondulkiri positions itself as a key player in Cambodia’s tourism and agricultural sectors, these newly rehabilitated dams will serve as a cornerstone for sustained regional growth.
