MPWT Sets Goal to Complete Phnom Penh-poipet Rail Line by This Year

Following the opening of the Poipet-Serey Soporn rail line, H.E. Sun Chanthol, Senior Minister, Minister of Public Works and Transport has revealed that he expects to finish construction of the whole line from Phnom to Poipet within this year.

“At this stage, we have achieved the first part which is Serey Sophorn-Poipet. Actually, with the initial plan, by this month Serey Sophorn-Battambong has to be finished. By May, the line should already reach Pursat. While from Pursat to Phnom Penh is planned to finish by July,” said H.E. Sun Chanthol during the soft opening of the Phnom Penh Airport train on 10 April.

However, H.E. Sun Chanthol has yet to clearly confirm whether the plan will stay on schedule. When complete, Cambodia will have a full rail line from Phnom Penh to Poipet, which can then connect on to Bangkok by switching to Thailand’s network at the Khmer-Thai border town of Poipet.

“Connecting Phnom Penh to the Thai border is considered one of the key parts of Cambodia’s logistic master plan and is also is a part of the eastern corridor of the Singapore-Kunming Rail Link, that aims to improve the connectivity among ASEAN members,” said H.E. Sun Chanthol.
