Major Progress Made on Flood Prevention in Western Phnom Penh

In a significant step towards mitigating flooding in western Phnom Penh, the ambitious drainage and drainage system restoration project has reached a milestone, now standing at 50.50% completion as of 5 January 2025. This essential infrastructure initiative, spearheaded by the General Department of Wastewater Treatment System under the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, aims to bolster the city’s defenses against seasonal rains.

The project focuses on enhancing the southern part of Phnom Penh, where flooding has historically posed challenges. Conducted by the construction consortium PPPP-TCM JV, the undertaking features two pivotal areas of work. The first involves the construction of drainage boxes along National Road 4, stretching from PK 14 + 050 to 19 + 700. The second area encompasses extensive rehabilitation efforts, including the restoration of 6,100 meters of canals, the installation of 1,970 meters of sewers, the construction of sewer systems at nine critical crossings, and the establishment of four sluice gates along the railway between PK 15 + 450 and 23 + 550.

Officials from the Department of Public Works project that this large-scale infrastructure venture will profoundly impact flood reduction, particularly benefiting the districts of Khan Kampol and Khan Por Sen Chey. Beyond mitigating flooding, this project is set to enhance public health, improve sanitation, and elevate the overall welfare of local communities while preserving the aesthetics of the city.
