Bavet City Takes Major Step Towards Sustainability as Landfill Project Underway

In a positive development for Bavet city, construction of a significant landfill project has officially commenced on a sprawling 21-hectare site in Trang Mtes village, located in the heart of Svay Rieng province. The ground-breaking ceremony, held on 31 January 2025, began a transformative initiative to enhance the city’s environmental infrastructure.

This project is part of the Asian Development Bank (ADB) Liveable Cities Project, which signifies a pivotal partnership between the Royal Government of Cambodia and the ADB. The agreement, signed on 8 December 2021, entails a concessional loan of USD 193.20 million, alongside a matching contribution of USD 13.20 million from the government. The ambitious project is slated to unfold over six years, with a targeted completion date of 31 May 2028.

With a total of four sub-projects included in the ADB initiative—two in Bavet City and others in Poipet City and Kampot City—the Bavet landfill is poised to make a lasting impact. The project is divided into two main parts, focusing on both waste management and infrastructure development.

Part 1 includes the establishment of five landfill pits and a comprehensive wastewater management system.

Part 2 encompasses many facilities, including security posts, liquid waste storage tanks, weighbridges, and administrative offices. The project will also feature state-of-the-art amenities such as dining areas, parking lots, and parks, all while ensuring efficient waste separation and composting areas.

This landmark project promises not only to enhance the cleanliness and aesthetics of Bavet City but also aims to position it as a key economic hub in the region. By improving environmental standards and bolstering the capacity of local authorities, Bavet City is set to compete in the “Clean City” initiative, showcasing its commitment to sustainability and community wellbeing.

As construction progresses, the community can look forward to a greener, cleaner, and more vibrant Bavet city—a true testament to innovation and environmental stewardship.
