Thailand to Invest USD 11 Million in Border Fence with Cambodia

In a move to bolster border security, Thai authorities have announced plans to construct a 55-kilometre fence along the Cambodian-Thai border in Sa Kaeo province, with an estimated budget of 395 million baht (approximately USD 11 million). This significant development was reported by Radio France Internationale (RFI) on 13 February 2025.

Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai, responsible for security matters, has given the green light to review and advance the proposal for this border fence, highlighting its importance in combating illegal border crossings, online fraud, and human trafficking originating from Cambodia.

In conjunction with the fence, Sa Kaeo Governor Parinya Phothisat has proposed additional enhanced border security. These include the installation of surveillance cameras along the fence to monitor activities more effectively.

Moreover, Governor Phothisat has urged the Thai government to establish a special consular office to oversee the welfare of approximately 30,000 Thai nationals currently working across eight provinces in Cambodia. This initiative aims to ensure Thai citizens’ safety and security abroad.

This comprehensive approach underscores Thailand’s commitment to strengthening its border security measures while addressing ongoing concerns regarding transnational crime and the welfare of its citizens working overseas.
