TotalEnergies Commits to Renewable Energy Investment through Cambodia’s REDD+ Initiative

In a significant move towards sustainable development, TotalEnergies has announced its plans to invest in renewable energy initiatives aligned with Cambodia’s REDD+ project. This commitment was confirmed during a meeting between HE Dr Eang Sophallet, Minister of Environment, and Ms. Dinah Kumar, Managing Director of TotalEnergies.

During their discussion, Minister Sophallet underscored the vital role of collaboration between the Ministry of Environment and private sector partners in tackling environmental challenges. “Our combined efforts are essential for promoting sustainable development, grounded in the three-pillar environmental cycle strategy: clean, green, and sustainable,” the minister stated.

Ms. Kumar expressed her strong commitment to sustainability, detailing TotalEnergies’ efforts to reduce emissions by investing in renewable energy projects and developing Nature-based Solutions (NBS) in line with the Royal Government of Cambodia’s Five-Point Strategy. She emphasised the urgent need to address climate change through effective initiatives like the REDD+ program.

Cambodia is actively involved in four major markets for carbon credit trading: the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM), REDD+, the Joint Carbon Credit Mechanism (JCM), and Voluntary Markets. Notably, between 2016 and 2019, the country successfully sold USD 11.6 million worth of carbon credits under the REDD+ framework, showcasing its growing role in the global carbon market.

Carbon credits serve as permits that allow companies to emit a certain amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), with one credit typically equivalent to the right to emit one ton of CO2. As countries and corporations strive to meet emission reduction targets, such initiatives are crucial for fostering a sustainable future. (Read more)
