Prime Minister Hun Manet Advocates for Preservation of Ecotourism Areas

In an impassioned address at the opening ceremony of the 9th River Festival, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen emphasised the importance of protecting the nation’s ecotourism areas from high-rise developments and intrusive residential projects. The Prime Minister urged local authorities to meticulously scrutinise any proposed developments from the private sector that could compromise the integrity of these natural landscapes.

Prime Minister Hun Manet articulated his vision for sustainable tourism: “We will not permit any company to implement projects in ecotourism zones that could harm the local communities.” He cautioned against the trend of replicating urban building models in scenic areas, asserting that tourists seek simplicity and natural beauty rather than an encroachment of urban architecture. “Don’t copy. If you see a beautiful mountainous area, don’t turn it into another Phnom Penh with towering 20-storey buildings,” he stressed.

The Prime Minister highlighted the necessity for resort designs to harmonise with their geographical surroundings, noting that this approach is vital for enhancing the allure of Cambodia’s natural tourism sites. He called upon relevant ministries and institutions to collaborate effectively, ensuring that the benefits of tourism development extend to local inhabitants and contribute to community growth.

Furthermore, Hun Manet insisted that before granting investment rights to private enterprises, there must be a strong commitment to prioritizing local development and preserving natural areas. His remarks underscore a significant shift towards sustainable tourism practices that balance economic growth with ecological preservation.
