Japan Partners with Cambodia to Enhance Water Supply & Environmental Monitoring

In a significant development for Cambodia, the Government of Japan has announced a grant exceeding USD 17 million to support two pivotal projects aimed at improving the country’s water supply system and establishing satellite measurement stations.

The funding agreement was formalized during a signing ceremony for the Exchange of Letters held on 25 March. This collaboration highlights Japan’s commitment to aiding Cambodia in its infrastructure and environmental monitoring efforts.

The financial assistance encompasses two major components:

1. Water Supply Expansion: An additional grant of approximately USD 13.3 million will go towards the expansion of the Phum Prek water supply facility, significantly enhancing access to clean water for local communities.
2. Satellite Measurement Stations: The project to set up permanent satellite measurement stations across Cambodia has received approximately USD 4.3 million, which will bolster the country’s capabilities in environmental monitoring and disaster management.

Furthermore, the Japanese government has recently decided to allocate an additional USD 11 million (1.466 million yen) for two separate initiatives aimed at supporting the Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC). These initiatives include promoting demining activities and establishing a mine museum in Siem Reap, further underscoring Japan’s dedication to fostering safety and development in Cambodia.
