Cambodia Secures USD 145 Million World Bank Loan to Boost Water Security

The Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, alongside the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries, has officially launched the “Improving Cambodia’s Water Security” project, backed by a substantial USD 145 million loan from the World Bank. This initiative aims to enhance water security across the nation, increase agricultural productivity, and strengthen resilience against climate-related risks.

At a recent seminar, HE Hean Vanhorn, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, emphasised the urgent need for improved water management amidst the challenges Cambodia faces, including severe floods, droughts, and pest outbreaks. “We must prioritize water security and implement sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural practices to protect our environment and agriculture,” he stated. HE Hean additionally introduced the policy dubbed “Eat, Use, Have, and Forever,” which focuses on advancing the agricultural sector. This initiative aims to ensure food security, bolster economic growth, create employment opportunities, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers throughout the country.

HE Chhea Bunrith, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Water Resources and Meteorology, highlighted the significance of the project, noting that it will play a crucial role in restoring and upgrading water infrastructure essential for agriculture, environmental protection, industry, tourism, and daily living for the citizens. “This foundation is vital for the sustainable development of our nation now and in the years to come,” he remarked.

The Cambodia Water Security Improvement Project (CaWSIP) is set to span six years, from 2025 to 2030, and will be implemented across four provinces: Kampong Thom, Kratie, Preah Vihear, and Mondulkiri, with the financial support of the World Bank. This initiative represents a significant step towards ensuring water security and resilient agricultural practices in Cambodia.
