Groundbreaking for Cambodia’s First Electric Vehicle Assembly Plant in Sihanoukville

BYD Cambodia Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the renowned BYD Auto Industry, has officially commenced construction of its first electric vehicle (EV) assembly plant in Cambodia. The new facility is strategically located within the Sihanoukville Special Economic Zone.

His Excellency Sun Chanthol, Deputy Prime Minister and First Vice Chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), presided over the groundbreaking ceremony. The plant is slated for completion in October 2025, with production of Cambodia’s inaugural electric vehicle expected to begin in early November.

With an investment of approximately USD 32 million, the project’s first phase will involve establishing a Complete Knock Down (CKD) assembly plant spanning roughly 12 hectares. The facility will assemble pure electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), with an anticipated annual assembly capacity of around 10,000 cars. (Read more)

During his opening remarks, HE Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol emphasized the growing influx of investment projects and welcomed BYD’s presence in Cambodia as a testament to investors’ confidence in the Royal Government of Cambodia. He highlighted ongoing efforts to promote favorable investment laws, enhance opportunities for foreign investment, and streamline related procedures.

In addition to expressing confidence in the project, HE Chanthol encouraged BYD to explore the potential for further investments within its production chain in Cambodia, aiming to foster a more robust manufacturing hub for electric vehicles in the region.

Establishing this assembly plant marks a significant step forward for Cambodia’s automotive industry and its commitment to sustainable transportation solutions.
