Phnom Penh-Poipet Railway Upgrade Project Moves Forward with Major Feasibility Study

The Phnom Penh-Poipet Railway upgrade project is making significant strides, currently entering a crucial phase of its feasibility study. Spearheaded by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport (MPWT) in collaboration with private sector partners, including China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC) and Royal Railway, the initiative is being bolstered by a generous USD 300 million grant from Japan.

This ambitious project aims to modernise the existing 386-kilometre railway running from Phnom Penh to Poipet, bringing it up to the standards of the already upgraded southern railway that connects the capital to Sihanoukville. According to updates from the MPWT, the railway upgrade will encompass critical enhancements in various areas, including:

– Upgrading materials by transforming from steel to durable concrete

– Transitioning from small to large rebar for greater structural integrity

– Overhauling railway foundations, bridges, and buildings

– Installing advanced signalling and information systems

– Upgrading railway infrastructure to enhance functionality

– Addressing operational challenges in railway stations and tracks

– Renovating station platforms and passenger areas

– Implementing comprehensive information and communication systems for integrating other transport modes

– Streamlining operations for both passenger and freight transport

Once completed, the upgraded rail infrastructure will allow for increased train speeds, reaching up to 80 km/h for passenger trains and 50 km/h for freight trains, while prioritising safety for all users.

The new railway line will traverse six provinces and cities: Phnom Penh, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Battambang, Banteay Meanchey, and Poipet, establishing a vital connection for both passengers and goods throughout the region.

This project underscores Cambodia’s commitment to enhancing its transport infrastructure, promising not only improved efficiency in travel but also significant boosts to local and regional trade upon its completion.
