Cambodia Launches Ambitious USD 95 Million Rural Water and Sanitation Initiative

In a significant step towards enhancing rural sanitation and water supply, the Royal Government of Cambodia has officially launched a comprehensive development program valued at over USD 95 million. The announcement was made by Mr. Tith Sopha, Deputy Secretary-General and Program Director, during a groundbreaking ceremony for new water and sanitation infrastructure in Stung Treng province.

The program, designed to bolster sustainable rural water supply and sanitation, is backed by a substantial budget, including a government contribution of USD 2.14 million and a generous grant from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) amounting to USD 93 million. Notably, a segment of this funding, USD 3 million, comes from the Japan Fund for Prosperity and Resilience in Asia and the Pacific (JFPR).

Spanning a five-year timeline from 2024 to 2029, the initiative targets nine provinces—Battambang, Pailin, Banteay Meanchey, Oddar Meanchey, Preah Vihear, Stung Treng, Kratie, Kampong Speu, and Kampot—covering approximately 400 villages and 50 communes.

At the ceremony, HE Chhay Rithsen, Minister of Rural Development, highlighted the ministry’s ongoing efforts to implement the National Action Plan on Rural Water Supply, Sanitation, and Hygiene. He expressed optimism about the project’s potential to further boost the nation’s sanitation and water access.

Currently, Cambodia boasts a commendable water and sanitation coverage rate of 92%, with 89% access to basic water supply and 95% to basic rural sanitation. Additionally, 21 capitals and provinces have achieved Open Defecation Free (ODF) PLUS and ODF status, marking a significant milestone in public health and hygiene standards.

This groundbreaking initiative is set to enhance the quality of life for countless Cambodians, demonstrating the government’s commitment to sustainable development in rural areas.
