A leading Japanese company eyes the investment in Cambodia’s water infrastructure

In a significant development for Cambodia’s water infrastructure, Marubeni Corporation, a leading Japanese multinational, has expressed strong interest in investing in the sector. The announcement follows a meeting between HE Hem Vandy, Minister of Industry, Science, Technology, and Innovation, and a delegation from Marubeni on July 1, 2025.

Marubeni representatives highlighted the company’s extensive experience in the water supply industry, noting their operations serve over 10 million people in Manila, 2 million in Chile, and an additional million in various regions across the globe. Their proposal aims to implement a similar business model in Cambodia’s urban centers while also expanding services to rural areas, thus contributing to the country’s efforts towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals, specifically Goal 6.1.

Minister Hem Vandy welcomed the initiative, emphasizing the Royal Government’s commitment to fostering private investment that focuses on sustainable, long-term solutions rather than short-term fixes. He urged potential investors to develop comprehensive plans that consider the increasing demand for water as well as future industrial development needs, particularly in processing and distribution networks.

Marubeni Corporation is recognized as one of Japan’s largest and most diversified investment firms, with ventures spanning machinery, energy, chemicals, food, textiles, metals, and minerals. Their collaboration with both governmental and private sectors on large-scale infrastructure projects positions them uniquely to address issues related to water scarcity and quality in Cambodia.
