Environmental Improvement Projects in Battambang Reach Significant Milestones

Battambang province has made remarkable progress in environmental enhancement efforts surrounding Tonle Sap Lake. The urban environmental management improvement project in the eastern region has successfully achieved 100% implementation, while the western provincial water supply and sanitation project currently stands at 76% completion. This announcement was made by the provincial administration on July 4, 2025.

The eastern project, known as the Urban Environmental Management Improvement Project around Tonle Sap Lake, Phase 2, has seen extensive infrastructure development. Key achievements include the construction of a sewage collection main pipe system stretching 32.56 kilometers, a sub-pipe system for households measuring 56.70 kilometers, and connections to sewage pipes for 4,131 households. Additionally, the project has established a 10.02-hectare sewage treatment plant, built toilets for 400 underprivileged individuals, and repaired 68 roads totaling 40,784 meters in length.

In contrast, the western project, which spans Svay Por Sangkat, Chamkar Samrong Sangkat, Slaket Sangkat, Battambang city, and Otaki Commune in Thma Kol District, is on track for completion by September 30, 2025. This project includes the construction of a backwater pipe system measuring 4.48 kilometers, a main sewage collection pipe system of 13.65 kilometers, and 50.95 kilometers of secondary sewage collection pipes, aiming to connect 5,057 households. A wastewater treatment plant covering 8.9 hectares is also in progress.

It is important to address the impact of construction activities, as 52 roads were reported damaged during the project implementation. Of these, 22 roads have been repaired, covering a total of 8,741 meters, while 30 remain unrepaired, totaling 14,857 meters. Out of the damaged roads, 8 are scheduled for repair by contractors in the near future, while plans for the remaining 22 roads are set for the next phase of the project.

Battambang province has been selected as a focus area by the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, receiving financial backing from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to support the establishment of essential wastewater treatment facilities.

Additionally, the Battambang landfill located in Poi Svay village, Takram commune, Banan district, has been officially inaugurated as part of the Tonle Sap Lake Urban Environmental Management Improvement Project Phase 2. (Read more)
