In a significant move to enhance bilateral relations, the Shanxi Provincial Department of Commerce of China has pledged to deepen cooperation with Cambodia in the fields of tourism, culture, and investment. This commitment was articulated during a recent meeting held on August 6, 2024, between Mr. Ngou Sengkang, the Deputy Governor of Siem Reap Province, and a delegation from China’s Shanxi Province, led by Mr. Wang Hongjin, the department’s director.

Mr. Wang highlighted the purpose of their visit, emphasizing a collaborative approach to bolster tourism and cultural exchanges while also discussing potential investment opportunities. He also announced plans to provide scholarships for Cambodian students from Siem Reap to study in Shanxi Province, fostering educational exchanges between the two regions.

Deputy Governor Ngou Sengkang expressed his enthusiastic support for the proposed cooperation, noting that nurturing this relationship would pave the way for mutual benefits and progress for both nations.

In a related development, on July 29, 2025, a delegation from Beihai City in Guangxi Autonomous Region met with Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism to explore the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) into the Cambodian tourism sector. This initiative aims to modernize and enhance the tourism experience in Cambodia, making it more competitive and appealing to global travelers.

Furthermore, recent data from the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC) highlights China’s significant role in Cambodia’s investment landscape, accounting for over 52% of the total investment capital in the first half of 2025.
