China Completes Construction of 88 High-rise Buildings in 2018

The popularity of high-rise construction in China’s has reached new heights with more than 80 high-rise buildings completed within one year.

According to a report on tall buildings released by the Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH), China has recently taken the lead in skyscraper construction, with 88 high-rise buildings completed in 2018, more than anywhere else in the world.

The 88 high-rise buildings completed in China equal 61.5% of the 145 buildings measured at 200 metres or more that were completed across the globe in 2018.

Those tall buildings include the 109-storey office building of China Zun, the 94-storey Changsha IFS Tower T1, the 68-storey office building of China Resources, as well as many other buildings as described in the chart below.

However, within this fast moving construction in China, the report pointed out that this may change in 2019 due to domestic economic conditions such as additional tariffs and financial restrictions.

“It can also be expected that any tariffs imposed against China would lead to disruptions in the global construction industry, particularly concerning steel, as well as in China itself,” the report stated.

“The ability of Chinese banks and developers to fund overseas projects could be further reduced; overseas investment has already been strongly curtailed during 2018, resulting in the cessation, sale, or interruption of Chinese investor-driven projects in Australia, the United States, and elsewhere”, it added.

Meanwhile, Cambodia is among the countries that receives huge investment from China each year for the construction industry. According to data from the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC), China ranked number one in Cambodia for construction investment with construction investment capital from Chinese companies totalling more than US$2 billion in the last 10 years.
