The Swedish government and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) will together help increase solar energy across Cambodia as part of a newly-launched sustainable development programme.

Launched on March 11, 2019 at the Raffle Le Royal Hotel, the US$1.8 ‘Toward Environmental Sustainability (TES)’ project will see work being done to help address challenges in accessing affordable and clean energy for
Cambodian households.

With Cambodia aiming to provide electricity nationwide by 2020 and connecting 70% of households with grid electrification and reduce CO2 emissions by 27% by 2030, this project will help make these goals become possible.

“This project will unlock the potential of solar energy by removing policy, technical and financial barriers with the aim of providing reliable and affordable electricity access to those living in remote off-grid communities,” the press release said.

Nick Beresford, UNDP Resident Representative, said that more solar energy presents a way for Cambodia to continue rapid progress towards upper middle-income status, but must be done with much better health and social outcomes.

“The government of Sweden is delighted to support this project as we strive to promote innovative approaches to…expanding energy access in order to assist Cambodia’s move towards environmental sustainability,” said H.E Maria Sargren, Sweden’s Ambassador to Cambodia.
