Female Nigerian Entrepreneur Transforms Tyre Waste into Sustainable Construction Products

In the bustling city of Lagos, a visionary entrepreneur, Ifedolapo Runsewe, is revolutionising the way Nigeria deals with tyre waste. Through her company, Free Recycle, Runsewe is not only addressing the environmental challenge posed by discarded tyres but also creating valuable products for various applications. The Free Recycle factory, a beacon of sustainability, processes over 1,000 tyres daily, providing employment to more than 100 individuals.

The inspiration for Free Recycle struck Runsewe when she witnessed a hazardous pile of burning tyres at a landfill. Recognising the environmental impact, she embarked on a mission to convert these discarded tyres into rubber mulch—a versatile material with applications ranging from playgrounds to athletic tracks and landscaping projects.

According to Runsewe, “Rubber mulch is a game-changer in construction and landscaping. Its weather-resistant properties make it ideal for various purposes, and its durability outshines traditional alternatives like wood coverings. Beyond longevity, rubber mulch’s permeability and weight prevent scattering, eliminating the need for annual mulching and promoting plant health.”

Since its establishment in 2015, Free Recycle has experienced exponential growth and is now one of Nigeria’s leading tyre recycling companies. The company’s commitment to sustainability has garnered international recognition, with accolades from the United Nations Environment Programme and Forbes magazine, where Runsewe was named one of the “100 Most Inspiring Women in Africa.”

Through strategic partnerships with organisations like BASF Nigeria and the Nigerian Ports Authority, Free Recycle is not only reducing waste and pollution but also contributing to job creation and economic sustainability in Nigeria. Runsewe’s dedication to environmental responsibility and innovative entrepreneurship showcases the transformative power of individuals in addressing crucial environmental issues.
