AI Powerhouse: Flux Energy Compresses Five-Year Geothermal Project into 12 Months

Flux Energy Solutions has achieved a remarkable feat in renewable energy development, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and GPU-accelerated simulation to compress a 60-month geothermal reservoir modeling project into just 12 months. The successful optimization of a 69.5-megawatt (MW) geothermal field in western Turkey delivered a 500% gain in modeling efficiency and significant cost savings.

The project, located in the volcanically active Salihli district, aimed to maximize the sustainable performance of the large, complex, and naturally fractured geothermal reservoir. Faced with the daunting task of running millions of scenarios to ensure long-term field sustainability, Flux Energy turned to the Volsung platform, a geothermal simulation software developed by Seequent, The Bentley Subsurface Company.

The integration of Volsung’s GPU acceleration and physics-informed AI proxy modeling led to unprecedented gains in speed and efficiency. The team was able to run 3,000 high-fidelity simulations, the most staggering result being the reduction of 10 million scenario evaluations—a process estimated to take 380 years using conventional methods—to less than 10 days.

This technological leap resulted in major financial benefits, slashing the project’s simulation costs by 76%, from an estimated $1 million to just $240,000.

Ali Başer, Co-Founder and Reservoir Simulation Expert at Flux Energy, highlighted the impact: “Volsung empowered us to efficiently run 3,000 simulations, reducing modeling time by over 90%. This breakthrough allowed us to compress a project that would typically take 60 months using legacy methods down to just 12 months.”

Beyond speed and cost, the optimization strategy is crucial for Türkiye’s renewable energy targets. The new modeling approach has enhanced the long-term sustainable management of the reservoir, promising to extend the field’s operational life, minimize thermal drawdown, and reduce the future need for costly additional drilling.
