In a strategic move, Apple is reportedly channeling product development resources for its iPad to Vietnam, marking a significant shift in its global manufacturing landscape. Collaborating with China’s BYD, a pivotal iPad assembler, Apple is set to transfer New Product Introduction (NPI) resources to Vietnam—an unprecedented move for a core device, according to sources briefed on the matter, as reported by Nikkei on Friday 22 December.

The engineering verification for the test production of a new iPad model is slated to commence around mid-February, with the product anticipated to hit the market in the second half of the coming year. Apple’s diversification strategy aligns with industry trends, as other major suppliers like Luxshare and Foxconn have also invested in Vietnam recently to broaden production capabilities beyond China.

Apple and BYD have not responded to Reuters’s request for comments on this strategic shift. This development underscores Apple’s commitment to geographical diversification and reflects the evolving dynamics in the global tech manufacturing landscape.
