APSARA Authority Expands Angkor Botanical Garden to 150 Hectares to Enrich Tourist Experience

The APSARA Authority has embarked on a significant expansion project, enlarging the Angkor Botanical Garden from its original 15 hectares to an expansive 150 hectares, aimed at enhancing the tourism appeal of the renowned heritage site. Mr. Lay Poti, Deputy Director of the Department of Water Management, Forestry, and Infrastructure of the APSARA Authority, confirmed this development to Radio National of Cambodia, highlighting the strategic initiative to attract a diverse array of wildlife and visitors.

The expansion initiative, initiated in February 2024 and slated for completion by August, involves the installation of a robust perimeter fence to both safeguard the forested area and facilitate the thriving habitat of indigenous wildlife. Additionally, the project includes the construction of scenic walkways and pedestrian bridges, providing tourists with immersive experiences amidst the lush surroundings, conducive to health and wellness pursuits.

As part of the expansion efforts, the APSARA Authority has erected approximately 5,468 metres of cement poles and wire fences encircling the Angkor Botanical Garden, extending from its existing bounds to the southern Angkor Basin. This enclosure serves as a sanctuary for a multitude of wildlife species, fostering their natural habitat within the protected confines of the garden.

Furthermore, to enhance visitor engagement, the APSARA Authority has constructed dedicated pedestrian pathways, offering the public convenient access to observe and appreciate the diverse wildlife thriving within the expanded botanical garden.

Addressing misconceptions circulating on social media, Mr Lai Poti unequivocally refuted claims suggesting private commercial development within the Angkor area under APSARA’s auspices. He emphasised the authority’s unwavering commitment to preserving national heritage sites and debunked any misinformation impugning the integrity of governmental institutions and initiatives.

Crucially, entry to the Angkor Botanical Garden remains open to all, with no admission fees levied for Cambodian or international visitors, reflecting the authority’s inclusive approach to fostering public access and appreciation of Cambodia’s natural and cultural heritage.
