Bentley CTO Julien Moutte Unveils Vision for the Future of Infrastructure Engineering

Bentley Systems’ Chief Technology Officer Julien Moutte has shared the company’s long-term vision, emphasizing a strategy built on a unified portfolio, the power of geospatial data, and an unwavering commitment to openness.

In an interview with Tomas Kellner, Moutte detailed how these pillars are designed to unlock new levels of productivity for infrastructure professionals globally.

Moutte highlighted that the foundational element of Bentley’s vision is its “unique portfolio of products and engineering capabilities”—a collection that is both exceptionally broad and deep across the diverse industries and disciplines Bentley serves.

“That portfolio of applications, having them working as one, exchanging data back and forth, sharing insights is also something that is going to unlock a new level of productivity and efficiency in the way we design infrastructure,” Moutte stated.

A critical component of the strategy is the role of Cesium as a “powerful technological foundation.” Moutte explained that Cesium enables the integration of data from Bentley’s engineering applications with real-world data collected from the field.

By aligning all data points based on their position in space and time, Cesium acts as an “enablement layer,” creating the user’s “own digital twin of the world.” Furthermore, Cesium serves as a powerful open platform to empower the existing developer community, allowing them to build new applications and advance infrastructure solutions beyond Bentley’s internal capabilities.

Moutte underscored that for infrastructure assets designed to last for decades, openness is essential. This is the reason why Bentley is focusing on Open Data, Open Standards, Open APIs, and Open Ecosystems.

This open approach is key to ensuring that aggregated and curated infrastructure data remains leverageable in the future.
