Cambodia’s Major Steps in Wastewater Management as 122 Factories Commit to Automated Liquid Waste Control

A total of 122 Cambodian factories and enterprises have agreed to install automated monitoring systems for liquid waste control, aligning with national environmental regulations.

As of October 2024, five factories have fully installed and activated these self-monitoring systems, while 10 others are currently under contract for installation, according to an announcement by the Ministry of Environment on 23 October 2024.

HE Khvay Atiya, the ministry’s spokesperson, confirmed that the facilities already outfitted with the automated systems include key laundry and semi-finished product factories located in special economic zones across Svay Rieng, Kandal, Battambang, and Phnom Penh.

This advancement supports Cambodia’s goals of regulating waste discharge quality and minimizing environmental impact. According to the ministry, this self-monitoring technology for factories offers multiple advantages:

  1. Remote Monitoring: Enables real-time oversight of wastewater treatment and quality without on-site inspections by ministry officials.
  2. Regulation Compliance: Prevents non-compliant waste discharges and addresses leakage risks or unauthorized disposal practices.
  3. Accurate Data Collection: Provides scientifically reliable data on liquid waste’s quantity and pollution levels, ensuring transparency and accountability for all stakeholders.
  4. Prompt Pollution Response: With accurate data, the ministry can quickly instruct factories to correct any issues or, if necessary, suspend waste discharges to prevent environmental harm.

By implementing these systems, the Ministry of Environment aims to uphold stringent wastewater quality standards and take proactive steps toward a cleaner industrial sector in Cambodia.
