Cambodia Implements EURO 5 Fuel Standards to Combat Air Pollution

In a significant move to tackle air pollution, the Royal Government of Cambodia has announced the implementation of EURO 5 fuel standards, set to take effect in 2025. This initiative aims to enhance air quality and protect public health by regulating fuel emissions.

According to the official announcement, two key decisions have been made: the immediate implementation of EURO 5 standards for diesel fuels and a six-month transitional period to introduce EURO 5 standard gasoline, which will completely phase out the existing EURO 4 standard.

HE Khwai Atthia, Undersecretary of State and Spokesperson for the Ministry of Environment, emphasised that the new regulations will specifically target high-sulphur fuels, helping to significantly reduce harmful emissions. The implementation is scheduled to begin on 1 January 2024, aligning with the strict sulfur level standards outlined in EURO 5 for both gasoline and diesel.

EURO 5 represents the fifth emission standard developed by the European Union for vehicles with internal combustion engines, focusing on minimising harmful pollutants. This advancement in emission control technology mandates car manufacturers to adopt innovative solutions, such as diesel particulate filters (DPFs) to curb particulate matter emissions, enhanced engine management systems, and more efficient exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) systems.

As Cambodia moves forward with these new fuel standards, the government aims to promote a healthier environment and improve the quality of life for its citizens through cleaner air.
