Cambodia Sets Stage for Electric Vehicle Revolution with New Draft EV Policy 2024-2030

In a groundbreaking move poised to reshape Cambodia’s economic and social landscape, the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF) unveiled a comprehensive draft policy on the development of the electric vehicle (EV) sector for the period 2024-2030. Announced in a press release dated 24 April 2024, this initiative marks a significant step towards integrating technology and innovation into the nation’s international trade economy, enhancing competitiveness, and fostering overall economic and social advancement.

The draft policy is meticulously designed to capitalise on the burgeoning opportunities within the realms of technology and innovation. It aims to position Cambodia at the forefront of the international trade economy by fostering a competitive edge that will catalyse economic and social progress.

Furthermore, the policy is aligned with global environmental objectives, specifically addressing climate change mitigation and Cambodia’s ambitious pledge to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.

Central to the policy are targeted measures across three pivotal areas: (1) the promotion of electric vehicle usage, (2) the supply chain enhancement for electric vehicles, and (3) the implementation of environmental protection strategies. This tripartite focus is expected to drive the nation’s transition towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly transportation system.

Historically, the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, in collaboration with the World Bank, has laid the groundwork for this transition through discussions on the installation of EV charging stations. These talks underscore the commitment to promoting the widespread adoption of electric vehicles in Cambodia, alongside the development of a sustainable bus system project in Siem Reap.
