Cambodia to Operate 11 Landfills with 4.5 Million Tons Capacity by 2024

As of 2024, Cambodia is set to enhance its waste management infrastructure by operating 11 landfills, boasting a total storage capacity of over 4.5 million tons. This update was provided during a progress review meeting by the Municipal Solid Waste Management Committee (MSWMC) on 26 March 2025.

Mr. Chao Sophaphibal, Director General of the General Department of Wastewater Treatment Systems at the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and an active member of the MSWMC, emphasised the meeting’s focus on reviewing the current status of municipal solid waste management. It also served to present the municipal solid waste management policy for the years 2020-2030 and to address key initiatives aimed at enhancing waste management efficiency.

The Ministry of Public Works executes the national urban solid waste management policy. This includes collaboration with various ministries, institutions, and sub-national administrations to mobilise funding from development partners. These efforts are crucial for implementing investment projects to construct sanitary urban solid waste landfills in cities, districts, and towns across the nation.

The meeting underscored that in 2024, Cambodia will have 11 operational landfills strategically located across the country. These facilities will be situated in Preah Sihanouk, Battambang, Kampot, Kep, Stung Sen, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Kratie, Stung Treng, Serey Sophon, and Kampong Cham, contributing to improved waste management and environmental sustainability.
