Bangladesh to send construction workers as Cambodian numbers decline

The construction sector employs an average of 200,000 to 220,000 Cambodian workers per day, but this number dropped by 31.81% in September 2019 compared to the same period of last year, according to an October report by the Ministry of Land Management Urban Planning and Construction (MLMUPC).

Bangladesh’s New Age news reported that Salim Reza, secretary of the Ministry of Expatriates Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry, said that they were preparing to send their construction workers to Cambodia.

He said that officials of the Bangladesh embassy in Bangkok recently visited Cambodia to assess the demand for recruiting construction workers from Bangladesh.

He added that Bangladesh and Cambodia signed on a memorandum of understanding for exchanges of skills and recruitment from Bangladesh in 2017.

According to MLMUPC, non-skilled workers can be paid from 30,000 Riel to 40,000 Riel per day, skilled workers or supervisors can earn between 40,000 Riel and 60,000 Riel per day, while engineers and other professionals can earn from US$400 to US$2,500 per month.
