Cambodia’s Largest Water Reservoir Project Reaches 40% Completion in Pursat

Cambodia is constructing what is set to become the nation’s largest water storage facility, Reservoir Dam Development Project No. 2, in Pursat Province, an immense infrastructure project designed to secure water for agriculture and bolster flood control. As of late November 2025, the construction of the facility has reached approximately 40% completion.

The project, which began construction in January 2025, is located on the Pramoy River in Rokat Commune, Phnom Kravanh District, Pursat. Upon its scheduled completion in December 2027, the reservoir is anticipated to hold a massive 860 million cubic meters of water, officially making it the largest water reservoir in the country.

Prime Minister Hun Manet announced the progress on his social media page on November 24, 2025, detailing the project’s critical role in enhancing national water security.

The reservoir is engineered to provide four major benefits to the region:

  1. Massive Irrigation: The 860 million cubic meter capacity will be leveraged to irrigate approximately 262,500 hectares of farmland. This expansion is expected to stabilize and strengthen agricultural yields throughout both the dry and rainy seasons, supporting the expansion of the agricultural sector and contributing to overall food security.
  2. Flood Mitigation: A key design objective is to regulate water flow and substantially mitigate recurrent seasonal flooding in downstream areas of Pursat province, which have historically suffered significant damage.
  3. Infrastructure Protection: By controlling the Pramoy River’s water levels, the dam will reduce stress on and damage to crucial local irrigation systems and essential public infrastructure.
  4. Eco-Tourism: Once completed, the reservoir area is expected to spur local economic activity by developing into a natural eco-tourism destination.

The approximately $100 million project is positioned as a major national asset, enhancing Cambodia’s resilience to climate change and supporting sustainable development for rural communities.
