Chinese Company Plans Major Tourism Investment in Siem Reap

In a significant move for the Cambodian tourism sector, Yunnan Provincial Investment Holdings Group Co., Ltd (YIG), a prominent Chinese state-owned enterprise, has expressed its intention to embark on a large-scale, innovative tourism investment project in Siem Reap. This initiative, supported by the Cambodian Ministry of Tourism, is poised to enhance the region’s tourism capabilities and attract more visitors.

The announcement was made during a meeting on October 15, 2025, between H.E. Huot Hak, Minister of Tourism, Liu Minglin, Chairman of YIG, and Lu Wei, Chairman of Angkor International Airport Investment Co., Ltd. (AIAI). This collaboration aims to further develop Siem Reap’s potential as a premier tourist destination.

At the meeting, representatives from YIG confirmed plans to invest in the Siem Reap International Airport and develop the surrounding area into a vibrant hub for culture, tourism, and commerce. They also outlined plans to introduce high-tech, innovative tourism products that will be the first of their kind in Cambodia.

To ensure the successful implementation of these projects, the Minister and YIG’s leadership agreed to establish a regular review mechanism to monitor the progress of investments. This framework will enhance cooperation and trust between the parties, as well as address any challenges faced by tourists and travelers promptly.

Additionally, the Chinese Embassy in Cambodia reported a notable increase in Chinese visitors, with 53,291 tourists arriving in the first seven months of 2025—an impressive 21% rise compared to the same period last year. July alone saw China emerge as the largest source of foreign tourists to Angkor Wat, with 5,720 visitors.

With 2025 designated as the Cambodia-China Tourism Year, the influx of Chinese travelers is expected to continue growing throughout the year, further boosting Siem Reap’s prominence on the global tourism map. The forthcoming investments from YIG signal a promising future for the region’s tourism industry, embracing innovation and ensuring a memorable experience for visitors.
